Gale Farm herd retirement presentation

14/09/2026

Stephen Horrocks of the Gale Farm herd, Lancaster has decided to retire from Longhorn breeding and showing. He is losing some of his grazing and his right-hand woman, granddaugher Jess, is off to university to train as a vet - something she has always wanted to do.

Stephen set up his herd in 2011 having retired from the prison service where he managed the Kirklan herd at HMP Kirkham.  Foundation cows were from a mix of bloodlines - Three Bridges, Fishwick, Low Oaks and Kirklan amongst them.

The show ring beckoned and Stephen enlisted the support of his grandchildren and many friends. He's always been an enthusiastic advocate for getting cattle in the showring and especially encouraging the next generation.

In 2021 Stephen and Jess won the Society's Ambassador's Award for their contribution to the promotion of the breed.

To mark his retirement the Longbridge team presented Stephen with a rosette at Westmorland Show - his last ever show.

Everyone wishes Stephen well, and also wishes Jess all the best with her studies.
