Spring Show & Sale Report

28 April 2007 Worcester Market
LONGHORNS FLOURISH WITH HOT TRADE

The continuing good fortunes for Longhorn cattle took another great step forward at Worcester with the Society's Spring Show and Sale and two breed dispersal sales of the "Sutton" herd (W.J. Pennington) and "Logan" herd (Prof. I. Craft) totalling an impressive gathering of 160 head.

Buyers were present from Scotland to Cornwall, Wales to East Anglia and a strong contingent of Irish breeders set the pace throughout the sale.

Top price of the day fittingly went to the overall Show Champion "Charnwood Eric" a three year son of 'Ulverscroft John', owned by John Warner of Leicester and being secured by past Society Chairmanat Frank Sutton for use in his 'Parc Grace Dieu' herd at Raglan, Monmouth for 3,800 gns setting a new breed record price for a Senior Bull. This was also the highest price paid for a Longhorn sold through Worcester Market to date.

John Warner's "Charnwood" breeding also took Reserve Champion with an unserved heifer by 'Southfield Commando', peaking at 1,650gns to P Bell, South Clifton, Newark, Notts. Mr Bell, a comparative new breeder and discerning Show Judge made his presence felt throughout the day and purchased several other cattle including an unserved heifer from Aled Jones' 'Frondeg' herd at 1,500gns.

Young breeder, James Winnington from Church Broughton, Derby had two bulling heifers on show, selling at 1,320gns and 1,180gns respectively to D Howden, Ludgershall, Buckingham and Messrs Bunting, Colchester, Essex respectively.

The "Sutton" dispersal sale from Cheshire breeder John Pennington attracted good interest and spirited bidding climaxing in 2,400gns for his homebred stud bull "Sutton Dario" to P Morgan, Cheddar, Somerset. Females were also strongly followed with "Blackbrook Money Penny" a five year old 'Huntsham Cardinal' daughter with heifer calf at foot reaching a creditable 2,100gns to D Howden, Ludgershall, Bucks. Other cows with heifer calves at foot peaked at 1,700gns for 'Carreg Yana' to volume buyer P. Bell, Newark Notts.

Prof. Ian Craft's noted 'Logan' herd had all the right credentials for a great sale, all of which came to fruition with a packed ringside eager to compete for all classes of stock and a trade beyond expectation. Highlight of the sale saw "Logan Caspar" a two year old 'Huntsham Cardinal' son ringing the bell' at 3,400gns to Ian Clark's 'Holcombe' herd at Broadmayne, Dorchester, Dorset.

Females however stole the show with nothing short of exhilarating bidding for cows and calves right through to yearling heifers.
"Tops" in the cow and calf section was a bid of 2,700gns for "Gorse Iful" a six year old with heifer calf at foot, she was formerly Breed champion at Monmouth and joined some elite cattle at D. Hitchings herd at Corston, Bath, Somerset. Close behind came "Dodsleigh Eirlys" again with a heifer calf, levelling at 2,600gns to new formed herd at Holsworthy, Devon to C. & M. Perrett

In calf heifers were closely followed selling to 2,050gns for "Logan Blaze" a 'Blackbrook Hawkeye' in calf to Logan Bishop to S.J. & H. Smith, Castle Caereinon, Welshpool with a half sister making 2,000gns to P Bell, Newark.
A quality run of unserved heifers peaked at 1,500gns for "Logan Brenda", another Hawkeye daughter going to Adrian & Pauline Neads, Brent Knoll, Weston Super Mare.

Society Auctioneer, Clive Roads reported the astounding support and demand at the sale as "truly exciting for the breed and something very special for a breed that has improved beyond comprehension in the last 30 years".
