The Society's first online sale hosted by McCartneys Rural ran from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September. Top price was for Bertie Facon's Junior Heifer Gentons Tiptop who sold to £2600 to Peter Close for his grandson Tom Close. Bertie also sold another Junior Heifer, Gentons Trigger, to £2000 to Sandra Backway. In the cows Stephen Horrocks' first calver Bowland Ruby (bred by Guy Hope), in calf and with a calf at foot, sold to £2300 to David Rigg. David & Graham Walker's homebred 2011 born cow Newton Voodoo, with a calf at foot and back running with the bull, sold to £1400 to Bertie Facon.
The only bull entered, Kirklan Pedro, bred by HMP Kirkham and consigned by John Huntbach, sold to £1000 to George and Jackie Woollatt
The last lot of the day, four Fishwick Lord of the Rings/Fishwick Jamaica embryos sold to Nanning Van Wijk and Janny Van Dellen in Holland for £1200.
The online sale was a new way of trading for the Society and it's members and there were inevitably aspects which could be improved on in the future. As always good marketing is key and selling cattle online is very different to being able to see them in the flesh and have them ‘catch the eye', so photos and videos must be of the best quality possible. The Council is planning it's portfolio of sales for 2021 and will be looking at both with live and online sale options for members. Depending on how the COVID-19 situation progresses and how it may affect the way we do things in the future the online method of selling may become a bigger outlet for the society and the industry as a whole.
